My daughter, Clara, started with UA Crew in the winter of her freshman year. She did

not have the prototypical Crew body; less than five feet tall and under 90 pounds. After a few weeks struggling on the erg, a coach asked her to consider becoming a coxswain. She agreed and coxed for two seasons for the girls’ team before moving to the boys’ team in the spring of her sophomore year. By the time she graduated in 2018, the little girl who

joined Crew at the urgings of a friend had become a mature, confident young woman ready to take on all that life had to offer.

I also “joined” UA Crew during Clara’s freshman year and quickly learned that the description “ultimate team sport” does not just apply to the rowers. I ended up serving three years as a trustee, half of that time as Treasurer and half as President. We were fortunate during that time to have great coaches and a cohesive parent group, translating to lots of success on the water. But perhaps our biggest win was convincing the superintendent to keep UA Crew in mind as they drew up plans for the new high school. I was thrilled to see the new, dedicated home for the team that meant so much to Clara, and to me.  And now, more than seven years after Clara’s graduation, we still gather regularly with the lifelong friends we made at UA Crew, I still find myself checking results on Regatta Central, and I still get a smile on my face whenever I drive by the boatyard. Like so many before and after us, UA Crew impacted our lives in a very positive way.
